DHA regrets that our Affordable Housing, Workforce Housing, and Section 8 housing is currently full.  We also have a long waiting list of families who would like to move into our housing.  Our waiting list for Affordable Housing (12,000 families) and our list for Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers (4,000) are so long that we have had to close them because it will be years before we can get to the current families on the lists.  We publish notices in the newspaper when the lists will open in the future.

If you are homeless in DeKalb County, please give the Coordinated Entry Program a call at 404-687-3500.

Although we are unable to assist you at this time, DHA  would like to offer a few resources that may be helpful.

  • The United Way of Greater Atlanta helps through its referral line. You can dial 211 or access the United Way online at http://211online.unitedwayatlanta.org/

  • HUD has a new online resource that allows individuals and families experiencing financial hardship to locate essential resources within their community. The tool enables search by location and keyword for emergency shelter, food pantries, health clinics and clothing. Visitors to the site will also find helpful links to other emergency care resources, including homeless support, housing counseling and rental assistance.  The tool is available here Find Shelter tool

  • If you are near Decatur, you can also reach out to the Decatur Cooperative Ministries to seek assistance.  Information on their programs can be found at http://www.decaturcooperativeministry.org/html/programs.php  or you can call them at 404.377.5365.

  • Another resource for housing information in DeKalb County can be found at this website with shelters, housing, and assistance:  https://www.shelterlistings.org/county/ga-dekalb-county.html

  • If you are a veteran, you and your family may be eligible for the HUD-VASH Supportive Housing Program.  Please give them a call!  Atlanta VAMC HUD-VASH Program, 1701 Hardee Avenue Bldg. 128, Atlanta, Georgia 30310, 404-321-6111 Ext 7284 Hotline

  • www.Affordablehousingonline.com - This website includes single-family homes and apartments, and includes the apartment complexes built with government tax credits. Tax credit units will be listed as "income restricted" which means you can't be making more than 30% to 60% of the of the area median income (AMI) to qualify for one of the units, if available. Additionally, some of the newer tax credit communities have income limits that go up to 80% of AMI.  Because of the government funding, 5% of the units in tax credit properties must be "fully accessible for mobility impairments" and 2% must be "fully accessible for sensory impairments" (mainly hearing and vision).   To get into one of the fully accessible units in a tax credit funded complex,  use the websites listed above to find a complex you like, then find if it offers the BR size that works for you, then get on wait list for a fully accessible unit of the BR size you need.  Please note that tax credit communities must accept a housing choice voucher, if you have one.

  • www.georgiahousingsearch.org - Many landlords and apartment complexes list their available rental units on the website.  This site also lists tax credit properties.

  • Senior housing - If you are 55 years or older, you may qualify for certain "senior living communities". Others require that you be 62 years old. If you are in this age bracket, ask around your community and at the any faith congregations about senior apartments that are run by non-profits or by a faith community. These may provide more affordable living options for you.  Here are a few properties that offer subsidized senior housing.
The following Senior properties haver Project Based Vouchers and are for persons who are 62 and over:

  • HUD's website offers a list of affordable housing. HUD's website is www.hud.gov

  • https://resources.hud.gov/ - HUD RESOURCE LOCATOR - This is an online map that lets you search for affordable housing in the neighborhoods where you would like to live.  You are able to click onto a location and learn what type of housing is present and how to apply.

  • https://www.empowerline.org/ - This is a resource guide book for seniors and persons with disabilities.  It lists various housing, health, and resources that can assist families.

  • Waiting Lists - You may want to visit the website www.affordablehousingonline.com . This website lists housing authorities throughout the country that have open waiting lists.

We wish you the best in your search for affordable housing.  Frankly, it is very hard to locate affordable housing as there are many families seeking it at the same time.  Please be sure and apply anywhere a location is taking applications.  This will assist you in the future when your name does rise to the top of the waiting list.
