Construction started in June 2011! Completion is Scheduled for September 1, 2012.
The exterior design, floor plans and amenity space are complete, the seniors have reviewed the plans and continue to be excited over this planned building. It will have 80 units (72-1 bedrooms and 8 2 bedroom) and activity space for programs and services. Additionally, the management and maintenance offices will be on the ground floor.
The building is designed to be EarthCraft certified with energy efficiency and "green" concepts incorporated into the design. These include geothermal natural heating, geothermal HVAC in the common areas, 50kw solar away for the common areas, enhanced insulation and many other features.
This will be a beautiful building for our seniors! To help support increased services and support to our seniors, tax exempt donations to Decatur Housing Initiatives Corporation, a 501(C) 3 are being accepted.
Phase 1 is 2 20 unit buildings with 1, 2, & 3 Bedroom units. Both flats and townhouses are included in these predominantly brick buildings. The new units have achieved the Earth Craft multi-family designation, and the latest energy efficiency ideas are included.
Residents are ready to move in during March to these brand new up-to-date units. Features include, Washer/Dryer connections, dishwashers, sprinkler system, accent walls, granite countertops, large closets, carpet, 9ft ceilings, and Lots of light. Their input and support have helped make this effort a success.
The Decatur Housing Authority received a special Hometown Hero award from the Decatur City Commission in recognition of the services it provides to the Decatur Community. The Decatur Housing Authority has been a strong and reliable partner in the city’s efforts to provide affordable housing opportunities including offering homeownership possibilities to employees of the city and the city schools. The Decatur Housing Authority provided leadership in the redevelopment of the historic Scottish Rite Hospital property by developing the residences in Oakhurst Village. When the City Commission decided to develop a life-cycle housing program, the Decatur Housing Authority joined in to assist developers in organizing and managing it. Currently the Decatur Housing Authority is leading the way in transit-oriented development in the Avondale LCI project area with a mixed-use development offering a mixture of rental housing opportunities immediately adjacent to the Avondale MARTA Station
New Housing Assistance
Authority awarded 35 Housing Choice Vouchers to ser the non-elderly disabled. Also, 150 Housing Choice Vouchers for the HUD-VASH program to assist veterans in cooperation with the Veterans Administration.
